About California road rules
Driving on highways in California can be tiring given the speed of vehicles and the presence of large vehicles and semitrailer tractors. California has passed laws that restrict not only the speed of trucks but also the lanes that these larger vehicles and trucks may use.
The larger vehicles on all highways are generally limited to a top speed of 55 miles per hour. The same large vehicles/trucks are limited to the “right-hand lane”, depending on the number of lanes in the same direction on the highway.
For highways/freeways with three or fewer lanes (except lanes for carpools), lorries may drive only in the right lane unless you pass a slower moving vehicle. In four or more passes trucks can drive on the two right lanes. At no time may larger vehicles/trucks drive in the fast lane.
California has also introduced so-called “truck-only lanes”. These “truck-only” lanes separate the larger vehicles from cars on the highways and are designed for safety purposes such as speed and traffic flow. There are “only trucks” that are typically located on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Los Angeles and Kern County.
California has also introduced Vehicle Code §21654 for slower moving vehicles. This section on the vehicle code provides that a vehicle traveling at a lower speed than the normal traffic flow travels in the right lane unless another vehicle is overtaken or passed. A designated “Truck Trail / Slow-Speed Vehicles” exists in County San Bernardino on the Interstate 15 Freeway near Yermo. This “truck lane / slow vehicles only” is accessible to all vehicles, not just larger vehicles and trucks.
On the California highways, it is usually “driver attention”! If you are involved in a traffic accident, be it a different passenger car or a larger vehicle/truck, Heiting & Irwin lawyers are at your disposal to review and assist you in possible legal action.

When you have a claim
After a car accident, you may not know if you are entitled to a claim. To be eligible to claim damages, your accident must meet two criteria:
The accident is at least partly caused by the negligence of another party.
The accident caused serious physical injury to you or a family member.
Car accident lawyers in California can answer all your questions about what constitutes negligence and what it means for a “serious” injury.
If your lawyer determines that your accident meets these two criteria, we will immediately begin to prepare your claim.
What to do when the insurance company calls you
Once informed of your accident, representatives of your insurance company or the responsible party’s insurance company may contact you. It’s better if you avoid talking with them. Innocent comments can be manipulated to give the impression that the accident is your fault or to be used to state that your injuries are not serious. They can also try to force you to quickly sign a settlement that is worth far less than what you really need.
An experienced California lawyer will consider your current and future medical bills lost wages and other expenses. This will give you the compensation you need to cover the actual costs of your accident. We usually deal with the tactics of insurance companies, so when it calls you, hang up and contact us instead. We will help you determine if a settlement offer is fair or not, and we will talk with you to the insurance company.
